Psychopharmacologic Treatment

Psychopharmacology is the study of the use of medications in treating mental health disorders. The complexity of this field requires continuous study in order to keep current with new advances. Since the use of these medications is to treat mental health disorders,  an extensive understanding of basic neuroscience,  basic psychopharmacology,  clinical medicine,  the differential diagnosis of mental disorders and medical illnesses  and treatment options is required. Psychopharmacologists also must be skilled in building and utilizing a therapeutic alliance with the patient.

At The Recovery Centers, Dr. Russo, our Executive Medical Director, has extensive experience and training in psychopharmacology. He has been practicing psychiatry for over 21 years, and has worked with literally thousands of individuals. We at The Recovery Centers are highly specialized to treat a multitude of psychiatric and dual diagnosis conditions. Having an accurate and comprehensive understanding of psychopharmacology and proper diagnosis can make all the difference between achieving relief of symptoms versus chronic, and sometimes, needless suffering.

Our initial evaluation is detailed, individualized, thorough and discreet.  First, the assessment process begins with an Initial Assessment, a detailed and comprehensive evaluation addressing all aspects of one’s functioning, and conducted by a seasoned and highly qualified therapist who has a clear understanding of psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic approaches. Next, you will meet with Dr. Russo for an additional Medical Evaluation to review findings and formulate a treatment plan that is best for you.  Medical aspects of care are addressed as well, as Dr. Russo will fully evaluate your entire medical and psychiatric history, current and all prior medications, allergies, nutritional status, and any other relevant data. Our treatment approach is comprehensive and all encompassing. Besides medication prescribing, your assessment and ongoing treatment will also involve blood, allergy, genetic psychopharmacogenomic, and additional testing as needed, to provide the most accurate data possible. This will ensure  proper, safe, and effective prescribing of medication personally tailored to your condition(s).

Ongoing visits will be with your clinical treatment team and Dr. Russo as needed, and will be of sufficient duration to accurately assess your response to treatment and what adjustments may be needed to further alleviate or improve your symptoms.  We are invested in getting to know and appreciate our patients, and the rapport we create together will make all the difference in treatment outcome.  As a basic tenet of our practice,  we firmly believe that all treatment must be individually tailored, patient responsive, compassionate, thorough, effective, scientifically grounded  and respectful.

We accept referrals from all treatment facilities, private practices, hospitals, individuals and self referrals.  We work closely with the community and Tri State Area, and will provide services as requested. Our approach is collaborative and communicative, and we will make contact with, and speak to, other practitioners, other ancillary services such as schools and universities, legal personal, and employment related individuals as well.  With good communication and “everyone being on the same page”, treatment will be as seamless, effective and coherent as it must be.
